Strategic Energy's strategy has been to grow in deregulated retail energy markets. The company, formerly a subsidiary of Great Plains Energy, provides competitive electric services to109,000 commercial, institutional and small manufacturing accounts in California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington, DC, and is expanding its services. It also offers energy management and consulting services. Strategic Energy was founded in Pittsburgh in 1986 as an energy consulting firm, and began serving retail electricity customers in 1997. In 2008 Strategic Energy was acquired by Direct Energy for $300 million.
