The emphasis is on fresh at online grocer FreshDirect. The Internet grocery shopping service delivers to most of Manhattan, and some neighborhoods in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens. It has also expanded to serve parts of Long Island, New Jersey, and Westchester County. The company sells more than 3,000 fresh food and grocery items, as well as kosher and organic products to 250,000-plus customers. With a business model similar to Dell's, FreshDirect deals directly with producers and makes food to order, which undercuts its rivals. Jason Ackerman founded the company in 1999. Since launching its delivery service in 2002, FreshDirect has filled more than 7 million orders.
