This media firm depends on no one, except consumers looking for entertainment outside the mainstream. IFC Companies consists of cable's Independent Film Channel, movie production and distribution businesses (IFC Productions, IFC Films), and digital and on demand operations (IFC InDigEnt, IFC Films on Demand). IFC Films releases about 10 films a year. It made headlines with My Big Fat Greek Wedding (due to its unexpected success) and Fahrenheit 9/11 (which it co-distributed when Disney refused to release the controversial documentary). More recent IFC releases include Gus Van Sant's Paranoid Park and SherryBaby, staring Maggie Gyllenhaal. The firm is owned by Rainbow Media, the entertainment unit of Cablevision.
