The art house is the place to be for Sony Pictures Classics. The studio is the specialty film division of Columbia Tristar Motion Picture Group, which itself is a subsidiary of Sony Pictures Entertainment. It produces, acquires, and distributes upscale independent art films from all over the world. A shrewd purchaser of films on the festival circuit, Sony Pictures Classics' films have won more than 20 Academy Awards -- its Howards End, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Capote were each nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. More recent titles include Moon, Rachel Getting Married, Whatever Works, and Coco Before Chanel. The unit was founded in 1992 by co-presidents Michael Barker, Tom Bernard, and Marcie Bloom.
