Independent cinema looks good from Paramount's vantage point. Paramount Vantage, the specialty film division of Viacom-owned Paramount Pictures, produces and distributes art-house films such as A Mighty Heart, Into the Wild, and Babel. On average, the studio releases about 10 movies a year. After a few years when it was virtually ignored by Viacom, the media conglomerate has been giving the operating unit a higher priority, as well as more funds to make acquisitions on the film festival market. The company was founded in 1998 as Paramount Classics. In 2006 the studio reorganized its specialty label, renaming it Paramount Vantage. Paramount Classics remains a division within Paramount Vantage.
