Apogee Technology listened to the footsteps of competition in the audio-chip business and didn't like what it heard. In 2005 the company sold its audio division to SigmaTel to focus on developing a new, different line of chips. Apogee acquired a portfolio of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) intellectual property from Standard MEMS, Inc. in 2004 and established a MEMS division in order to develop system-on-a-chip (SoC) products, such as automotive sensors, disposable medical products, and headsets, that combine microphones with Apogee's audio amplification technology.
