The shape of future semiconductor manufacturing? It may be a ball. Ball Semiconductor has developed technology for fabricating chips on spheres of silicon, rather than the conventional flat silicon wafers. Founded in 1996, the company also designs, makes, and sells photomaskless exposure systems. Ball Semiconductor's products are used in lithography systems, optical research, fluorescent excitation processes, high-density printed circuit boards, color filters for LCD/thin-film transistor/plasma display panels, and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) manufacturing. The company is currently focusing on developing surface-acoustic wave (SAW) sensors.
