There is a good chance that Warner/Chappell Music owns the rights to the song that's stuck in your head. The subsidiary of Warner Music Group is the second largest music publishing businesses in the world (behind EMI Music Publishing), owning the rights to more than a million compositions. Its catalog includes everything from folk songs to Broadway showstoppers to obscure one hit wonders. It licenses these songs for use in advertising, films, television shows, and for inclusion on compilation CDs. It also collects fees for public performances of its songs. Warner/Chappell traces its roots back to several smaller music publishing firms formed in the late 19th century that were eventually acquired by Warner Bros.
