ViaCord (formerly ViaCell) dodges the debate over embryonic stem cells by focusing on stem cells from umbilical cord blood. A unit of scientific instrument maker PerkinElmer, ViaCord is a top cord blood bank, storing more than 170,000 cord blood units for future medical use. Stem cell harvested from cord blood can be used as an alternative to bone marrow transplant to treat some 70 diseases, including some cancers and blood disorders. ViaCord markets its cord blood storage service by educating OB/GYNs, hospitals, and other childbirth professionals about cord blood preservation. It also uses advertising and direct mail to reach expectant mothers. PerkinElmer acquired the business in late 2007.
