It's not liquid, it's not metal -- well, OK, it is metal. Still, Liquidmetal Technologies has built on research done at the California Institute of Technology by company officers William Johnson and Atakan Peker to sell amorphous metal alloys. Those products include an alloy that's lighter than titanium but twice as strong as conventional titanium alloys. The company's products are sold as bulk alloys, coatings, composites, and powders. Applications include casings for cell phones, defense products (armor-piercing ammunition), industrial coatings, and sporting goods (baseball bats, tennis rackets). Electronics giant Samsung is among the company's largest customers.
