Athena Diagnostics develops and sells assays used to diagnose, evaluate, and monitor neurological functions. The company has a stable of more than 200 tests, which are used to detect such conditions as Alzheimer's, nerve disorders, and genetic mutations associated with Huntington's disease and some forms of mental retardation. It has also developed tests for immune system functions, which can be an early-warning sign of some cancers. Hospitals and laboratories submit patients' tissue or fluid samples to Athena Diagnostics for testing; the company also markets its products directly to neurologists. Thermo Fisher Scientific bought Athena Diagnostics from former parent Behrman Capital in 2006.
