Some of the most sophisticated high-tech goods call for sophisticated Surface Technology Systems (STS). The company designs and manufactures several types of surface deposition and etching equipment, which is used to produce microelectronics devices, such as microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), thin-film heads, optoelectronic components, and compound semiconductors. For the production of some products, STS partners with Primaxx, XACTIX, and Advanced Vacuum. STS is a subsidiary of Japan-based machinery maker Sumitomo Precision Products (SPP). In 2009 SPP acquired the majority of Aviza Technology's assets, which merged with STS under the corporate umbrella SPP Process Technology Systems (SPTS).
