Selling toys is not all fun and games, as the nation's largest mostly mall-based toy chain KB Toys can surely attest. The struggling toy peddler operates nationwide through some 275 stores located in malls, as well as through 40 KB Toy Works shops, about 115 outlet stores, and 30 temporary holiday stores. The company primarily sells inexpensive toys and games to impulse buyers in malls, while leaving fiercely competitive toy marketing to niche leader Toys "R" Us and über discounters Wal-Mart and Target. KB Toys, which is owned by investment firm Prentice Capital Management (PCM), filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December 2008, which represents its second filing in four years.
