If you want to make a phone call from the North Pole, you want Iridium Satellite. The company offers mobile voice, data, and Internet services worldwide, targeting companies that operate in remote areas. It claims to be the only provider of truly global voice and data coverage. While Iridium focuses on such commercial industries as energy, defense, maritime, and mining, its main customer is the US Department of Defense. Boeing operates the Iridium system, which consists of 66 low-earth-orbit satellites linked to ground stations (the world's largest commercial satellite operation). An investor group led by former chairman and former Pan Am president Daniel Colussy formed Iridium Satellite in 2000.
