In some cases, Mindspeed Technologies' chips work even faster than human synapses. Mindspeed makes a variety of semiconductors -- including network processors, DSL transceivers, and fiber-optic components -- for use in networking equipment, such as optical switches and high-speed routers and multiplexers. Mindspeed sells its chips to such makers of networking and telecommunications gear as Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco Systems, Huawei, Mitsubishi Electric, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nortel Networks, Samsung Electronics, and ZTE Corp. Asian customers are behind more than half of sales. The company was the Internet infrastructure subsidiary of chip maker Conexant Systems until it was spun off in mid-2003.
