RRI Energy, a leading US independent power producer, has about 35 generating plants that give it a primarily fossil-fueled capacity of 14,500 MW. RRI Energy's customers include independent power producers, utilities, municipalities, and cooperatives. Its plants -- which are powered by coal, gas, and fuel oil -- serve much of the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Midwestern US along with California. In 2009, in a move to cut costs and slim down, the company sold its Texas retail business, which had accounted for more than two-thirds of its sales, to NRG Energy for about $285 million. It changed its name from Reliant Energy after that move.
