Mizuho means "golden ears of rice" in Japanese, but in the banking world it means the first bank with a trillion dollars in assets. Since surpassed by the likes of HSBC and Citigroup, Mizuho Financial Group is the parent of Mizuho Bank (retail banking), Mizuho Corporate Bank (commercial financial services), Mizuho Securities (investment and brokerage services), and Mizuho Trust & Banking. All told, the company has approximately 770 branches, sub-branches, and agencies in Japan and elsewhere. Mizuho Financial Group was formed in 1999 by the merger of The Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank, Fuji Bank, and Industrial Bank of Japan (IBJ).
