3-Dimensional Pharmaceuticals is adding a fourth dimension to drug discovery -- timeliness. The biotech firm's DiscoverWorks technology identifies drug candidates by using such features as target protein production, high-throughput screening, a library of some 450,000 chemical compounds and 2.5 billion novel analogs, and 3-D protein structure analysis to expedite the process. In addition to licensing its technology to such partners as Johnson & Johnson (J&J) and Bristol-Myers Squibb, the company is developing a pipeline of cardiovascular and oncology drug candidates, which it plans to license out in the early trial stages. J&J bought the company in 2003.
