Altec Lansing Technologies (ALT) is in the business of selling sound. The company is a leading manufacturer of speaker systems for consumer PCs, as well as sound accessories, such as headsets, headphones, and docking stations for personal digital media. It also makes home entertainment systems and scales its units to accommodate large venues. ALT traces its name back to audio pioneer James B. Lansing, who founded a firm devoted to theater sound systems in the 1920s. Headset specialist Plantronics, which acquired ALT in 2005 to strengthen its position in the PC speaker market, has agreed to sell the company to a Texas-based private equity firm.
