Grocery e-tailer GroceryWorks.com hopes shoppers stay home. The company is an online shopping and delivery service for bricks-and-mortar grocer Safeway and its subsidiaries Vons and Genuardis. Safeway.com operates in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento, California, Portland, Oregon, Seattle, Washington, Phoenix, Arizona, and the District of Columbia. Vons.com does business in the Southern California and Nevada markets, while Genuardis.com serves Philadelphia. GroceryWorks is now wholly owned by Safeway, which purchased the 38% stake in the company previously held by the UK's leading grocery chain Tesco PLC in 2006. The move anticipated Tesco's entry into the US where it will compete with Safeway.
