Telefónica O2 UK keeps a significant portion of Western Europe talking. The mobile phone operator serves about 35 million customers. Its O2 (UK) subsidiary is a leading mobile phone operator in the UK, with more than 19 million customers. Telefónica O2 UK also encompasses O2 Germany (14 million customers) and O2 Communications Ireland (1.7 million). The company is a subsidiary of Spain's leading telecom service provider, Telefónica. Once known as BT Cellnet, the wireless unit of British Telecom (now BT Group), O2 was acquired by Telefónica for $31.4 billion in 2006.
