Pharming has put pharma into farming. The biotech development company created Herman, the first genetically engineered bull, whose offspring produce human proteins in their milk. Pharming then adapted its transgenic technology to other species, including rabbits. Once purified, these proteins are used to build potential drugs. The company's lead candidate, Rhucin, is a treatment for hereditary angioedema, which causes tissues to swell. Prompted by research showing that genetically modified animals have a higher rate of DNA damage and shorter life spans, Pharming's DNage subsidiary researches age-related diseases (such as osteoporosis and neurodegeneration) which may be caused by DNA damage.
