Despite its best efforts, Entropin is feeling the pain of failure. The biotechnology firm's former drug candidate, ENT-103, was derived from the chemical breakdown of cocaine into other molecules. The drug candidate has analgesic properties that could meet a variety of pain management needs. ENT-103 was the active ingredient in another candidate, Esterom, that failed to meet expectations in clinical trials. Entropin hoped to develop both injectable and topical formulations of its lead product candidate and, appropriately enough, it also considered a version of the compound that could be inhaled. The company ceased operations in 2005 and is no longer seeking FDA approval for ENT-103, due to a lack of capital.
