After spinning off into orbit, SES NEW SKIES (formerly New Skies Satellites Holdings) operates seven geosynchronous communications satellites around the globe. The company -- created in 1998 through the partial privatization of Intelsat -- uses its satellites to provide TV broadcasting, Internet access, and data and voice transmission services. SES NEW SKIES' customers include broadcasters (such as the BBC and CNN), ISPs, corporate networks, and telecommunications carriers. SES NEW SKIES is domiciled in Bermuda but operated through Netherlands-based subsidiary New Skies Satellites. The holding company was owned primarily by The Blackstone Group until 2006, when SES Global bought it in a deal worth $1.2 billion.
