MFN Financial has had a mercurial rise and fall. The firm, through its subsidiary Mercury Finance, primarily provides credit to auto-buying consumers with bad or insufficient credit histories. MFN purchases the loans from auto dealers and collects on them through a network of about 15 offices. MFN Financial filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection related to accounting irregularities and overstated earnings. It sold its consumer installment loan portfolio to First Tower Corporation to consolidate operations and emerged from Chapter 11. The company was then bought by rival subprime auto financier Consumer Portfolio Services in March 2002.
