CVS Caremark (formerly CVS) interprets the scrawl of more US doctors than anyone. The CVS pharmacy chain fills more prescriptions at more drugstores than any other drugstore operator. With about 7,000 drugstores under the CVS and Longs Drug banners, the company is the nation's largest pharmacy chain (ahead of archrival Walgreen) as a result of a string of acquisitions that included the Eckerd chain, stores from Albertsons, and most recently Longs Drug Stores (2008). In 2007 CVS purchased prescription benefits management (PBM) firm Caremark Rx for about $26.5 billion. Caremark was combined with CVS's PBM and specialty pharmacy unit PharmaCare Management Services to form Caremark Pharmacy Services.
