Mellon has peeled off its thick rind of banking services to expose the succulent fruit of its fee-based offerings. For more than 130 years, the company's retail and corporate banking franchise in the mid-Atlantic region provided its high profile. Today Mellon has all but shed its banking operations in favor of fee-based businesses. These include its Asset Management segment, which consists of such units as Dreyfus, The Boston Company, Founders Asset Management, Standish Mellon, and UK-based Newton Investment Management. Mellon also performs asset servicing, institutional trust and custody, securities lending, foreign exchange trading, and treasury services. The Bank of New York is buying Mellon.
