E.ON U.S. (formerly LG&E Energy) may not be a Kentucky colonel, but it's a major power source in the state. Its regulated utilities, Louisville Gas and Electric and Kentucky Utilities, distribute electricity to 908,000 customers and natural gas to more than 318,000 customers in Kentucky and Virginia. The utilities have a combined generating capacity of 7,600 MW, primarily from coal-fired facilities. E.ON U.S.'s nonregulated businesses include international gas distribution and independent power production. E.ON U.S. is a subsidiary of German energy conglomerate E.ON.
