Terra would be happier if fertilizer prices were a little firma. The company ranks among the leading North American producers of nitrogen fertilizers. Through its North American nitrogen plants, it produces ammonia, urea, urea ammonium nitrate solution (UAN), and ammonium nitrate (AN). Terra operates plants in the US, Canada, and the UK through subsidiaries, joint ventures, and limited partnerships, including Terra Nitrogen, of which Terra Industries owns 75%. The company sells its products to dealers, retailers, cooperatives, and chemical companies. In 2009 CF Industries offered to buy Terra for about $2.1 billion, but Terra's Board turned down the offer.
