IPALCO Enterprises ensures that the Indianapolis 500 tracks are lit up and the sound systems are crackling. Through its regulated utility unit, Indianapolis Power & Light (IPL), IPALCO generates, transmits, and distributes electricity to about 470,000 customers in central Indiana. IPL has about 3,350 MW of generating capacity; most of its power is generated from coal-burning plants. IPALCO's nonregulated subsidiary, Mid-America Capital Resources, has an interest in a venture capital fund. The company has sold its steam distribution and metropolitan cooling system assets. IPALCO is a subsidiary of AES, a top independent power producer.
