Over the years the number of major US railroads has dwindled, but Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) thrives as one of the survivors. Through its primary subsidiary, BNSF Railway, the company is one of the largest railroad operators in the US along with rival Union Pacific. BNSF makes tracks through 28 states in the West, Midwest, and Sunbelt regions of the US and in two Canadian provinces. The company operates its trains over a system of about 32,000 route miles. Along with its rail operations, BNSF generates revenue from its BNSF Logistics unit, a provider of transportation management services. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway owns about 23% of BNSF and has announced it's buying the rest for $36 billion.
