The original Southern Bell, BellSouth is the incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC) for nine states from Louisiana to Kentucky. In spite of a decrease in demand for local wireline services, the Baby Bell has more than 20 million access lines in service. In late 2006 BellSouth was acquired by AT&T (formerly SBC Communications) in a deal valued at $86 billion, making it the world's largest telecom operator by market capitalization. Prior to the acquisition, BellSouth owned 40% of Cingular Wireless (now AT&T Mobility), the #1 mobile phone operator in the US; the deal gave AT&T complete control of the wireless carrier. BellSouth, now also known as AT&T Southeast, expects to incur 10,000 job cuts by 2009.
