Metamorphosis is more than a metaphor for Ma Bell. The telecom giant has been through more changes than a butterfly. Most recently AT&T has agreed to be acquired by SBC Communications in a cash and stock deal valued at $16 billion. AT&T is still a long-distance leader in the US with more than 30 million customers, but competition has driven rates to all-time lows and the company is no longer seeking new customers in its most traditional line of business. The company's biggest revenue generator and its new focus is the AT&T Business Services unit, which offers advanced data communications and accounts for nearly 75% of total revenues. The company's global network is among the largest and most advanced.
