Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) made some advances in its battle against Intel but hasn't capitalized on those gains. AMD ranks #2 in PC and server microprocessors, far behind its archrival. Though Intel commands about three-quarters of the world processor market, AMD at times eroded that market share thanks to the popularity of its Athlon and Opteron processor families. The company also makes embedded processors and other chips for communications and networking applications. Hewlett-Packard is AMD's biggest customer, and Chinese OEMs account for more than 40% of the company's sales. In early 2009 AMD split its operations, spinning off a manufacturing venture.
