Appointment of Certain Officers; Compensatory Arrangements of Certain Officers.

Kenneth T. Stevens, who has served as a member of the Board of Directors of Spartan Stores, Inc. (the "Company") since 2002, has resigned from the Board in order to devote more time to other professional commitments. Mr. Stevens' resignation was effective on September 11, 2009. In a letter to the Executive Chairman of the Company, Mr. Stevens noted that his resignation was not due to any disagreement with the Company or any executive officer or associate of the Company on any matter relating to the Company's operations, policies or practices.
