Departure of Director

On September 2, 2009, StanCorp Financial Group (the "Company") was informed of the death of director Ralph R. Peterson, who passed away on September 1, 2009. Mr. Peterson served as a director of the Company since 1992 and was a member of the Audit and Finance & Operations Committees of the Company's board of directors.

On September 3, 2009, the Company issued a release reporting the death of Mr. Peterson. A copy of this release has been posted to the Company's web site at www.stancorpfinancial.com and a copy is also set forth in Exhibit 99.1.
