(b) On August 9, 2009, James A. Leach resigned from the Board of Directors of
United Fire & Casualty Company, due to his recent appointment by the Senate
as Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, which requires Mr.
Leach to resign all positions in public companies as well as non-profit
institutions.
In his notification to the Board of Directors, Mr. Leach noted his "enormous
respect for [United Fire & Casualty Company], its people, and especially my
colleagues on the board. I wish you the very best in these competitive, trying
times. I will miss our board meetings."
