On July 7, 2009, Sprint Nextel Corporation (the "Company") entered into an agreement with Ericsson through which Ericsson will assume the day-to-day execution of services, provisioning and maintenance for Company-owned CDMA, iDEN and wireline networks. The seven year agreement, with an option for renewal, will result in payments for services valued at $4.5 to $5 billion over the initial term. As part of the agreement, approximately 6,000 Company employees will begin performing their network functions as employees of Ericsson Services Inc., a wholly-owned Ericsson subsidiary based in Overland Park, KS, in the third quarter of 2009.
The Company is not transferring ownership or control of its network assets and will continue to solely control network strategy and investment decisions. The Company retains full control of the customer experience, customer technical support and services review. In addition, the Company retains the right to make all policy, legal and regulatory decisions applicable to the Company's networks. Through this agreement, the Company expects to gain a competitive advantage by augmenting its network with global best practices and state-of-the-art tools provided by 30,000 additional highly specialized network experts, while realizing immediate cost-savings on labor, network management and operations.
