Item 8.01. Other Events.

On September 30, 2008, Alcoa Inc. issued a press release announcing it will curtail the remaining production at its Rockdale, Texas aluminum smelter beginning immediately. This action will result in a charge of $48 million ($31 million after-tax) in the third quarter of 2008. The charge is comprised of $38 million ($25 million after-tax) in employee severance costs for the layoff of approximately 660 employees, a $6 million ($4 million after-tax) curtailment charge associated with other postretirement employee benefit plans, and $4 million ($2 million after-tax) in other exit costs.
