(NYSE:HW) Headwaters Incorporated provides products, technologies, and services to construction materials, coal combustion products, and alternative energy industries in the United States. Its Construction Materials segment designs, manufactures, and sells architectural stone and resin-based exterior siding accessories, such as shutters, mounting blocks, and vents; and other products used in the new construction, remodeling, and home improvement markets. The company’s Coal Combustion Products segment manufactures a range of building materials that use fly ash, such as block, stucco, and mortar, which are used as a substitute for portland cement. Its Alternative Energy segment owns and operates various coal cleaning facilities that remove rock, dirt, and other impurities from waste coal. This segment also licenses technology and sells reagents to the coal-based solid alternative fuel industry. In addition, it offers heavy oil upgrading process technology, which generates a highly active molecular catalyst to convert residual oil feedstocks into higher-value distillates that can be refined into gasoline, diesel, and other products.
