| | The Empire District Electric Company, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the generation, purchase, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity in parts of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. It operates in three segments: Electric, Gas, and Other. The Electric segment generates electricity from coal, natural gas, and hydro sources; and supplies electric service at retail to 121 incorporated communities and various unincorporated areas, as well as at wholesale to four municipally owned distribution systems. As of December 31, 2007, it had generating facilities with an aggregate generating capacity of 1,255 megawatts; transmission systems consisted of approximately 22 miles of 345 kV lines, 434 miles of 161 kV lines, 744 miles of 69 kV lines, and 81 miles of 34.5 kV lines; and distribution systems consisted of approximately 6,785 miles of line. This segment also owns and operates water pumping facilities and distribution systems consisting of a total of approximately 86 miles of water mains in three communities in Missouri. It primarily serves residential, commercial, industrial, wholesale on-system, and wholesale off-system customers. The Gas segment provides natural gas distribution to communities in northwest, north central, and west central Missouri. Its principal gas utility properties consisted of approximately 87 miles of transmission mains and approximately 1,110 miles of distribution mains. This segment primarily serves residential, commercial, and industrial customers. The Other segment engages in the leasing of fiber optics cable and equipment. The company was founded in 1909 and is based in Joplin, Missouri. |
