(NYSE:WR) Westar Energy, Inc., an electric utility, provides electric generation, transmission, and distribution services in Kansas. It supplies electric energy at wholesale to the electric distribution systems of 35 cities and 4 electric cooperatives in Kansas. The company owns a 47% interest in the Wolf Creek Generating Station, a nuclear power plant located near Burlington, Kansas. In addition, it engages in energy marketing, as well as purchases and sells wholesale electricity in areas outside its retail service territory. As of December 31, 2007, the company had approximately 6,178 megawatts of electricity generating capacity, as well as owned 6,100 miles of transmission lines, 23,700 miles of overhead distribution lines, and 3,900 miles of underground distribution lines. It served approximately 674,000 customers in Kansas, including the cities of Topeka, Lawrence, Manhattan, Salina, Hutchinson, and Wichita.
