Its products include lumber products, plywood, medium density fiberboard, and related by-products, such as wood chips. The company sells its products to wood products retailers, home construction, and industrial customers. Plum Creek Timber Company also focuses on mineral extraction; and natural gas production, communication, and transportation. As of December 31, 2008, it operated approximately 7.4 million acres of timberlands in the northwest, southern, and northeast United States, and owned and operated 10 wood product conversion facilities in the northwest United States. The company has elected to be treated as a REIT under sections 856-860 of the United States Internal Revenue Code of 1986. As a REIT, it would not be subject to the federal income tax, provided it distributes at least 90% of the taxable income to its shareholders.
