Its MBS portfolio consists of pass-through certificates, collateralized mortgage obligations, and agency MBS derivatives. The company has elected to be taxed as REIT under the Internal Revenue Code. As a REIT, it would not be subject to federal income tax purposes, provided that it distributes at least 90% of its REIT taxable income to its shareholders. The company was formerly known as Opteum Inc. and changed its name to Bimini Capital Management, Inc. in September 2007.
