(NasdaqGS:WOOF) VCA Antech, Inc. operates as an animal healthcare services company in the United States and Canada. The company offers veterinary services and diagnostic testing to support veterinary care; and sells diagnostic imaging equipment, and other medical technology products and related services to the veterinary market. It operates in three segments: Animal Hospital, Laboratory, and Medical Technology. The Animal Hospitals segment operates animal hospitals, which offers a range of general medical and surgical services for companion animals. It also offers specialized treatments, including advanced diagnostic services, internal medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, dermatology, and cardiology, as well as provides pharmaceutical products. In addition, this segment performs pet wellness programs, including health examinations, diagnostic testing, routine vaccinations, spaying, neutering, and dental care. The Laboratory segment operates veterinary diagnostic laboratories that provide testing and consulting services in the detection, diagnosis, evaluation, monitoring, treatment, and prevention of diseases and other conditions affecting animals. The Medical Technology segment sells digital radiography and ultrasound imaging equipment; and offers related computer hardware, software, and consulting and training services, as well as mobile diagnostic ultrasound imaging services. In addition, it develops and licenses VetPACS, a software package that allows for the archival and communication of digital images, image manipulation, networking, case reporting, and image and case transmission over the Internet; and TruDR that allows to capture digital x-ray images and transmits those images to a computer containing VetPACS. As of December 31, 2008, the company operated 44 veterinary diagnostic laboratories in 50 states and certain areas in Canada, as well as a network of 471 animal hospitals in 39 states.
