American Public Education, Inc. and its subsidiaries provide online postsecondary education to the military and public service communities in the United States. It operates through two universities, American Military University and American Public University. The company’s universities offer a common faculty and curriculum, which includes 57 degree programs and 49 certificate programs in various disciplines related to national security, military studies, intelligence, homeland security, criminal justice, technology, business administration, and liberal arts. Its students primarily serve in the United States military on active duty, in the reserves, or in the National Guard. American Public Education’s students also include public service professionals, including federal, national, and local law enforcement personnel or other first responders. The company was founded in 1991. It was formerly known as American Military University, Inc. and changed its name to American Public Education, Inc. in 2002. The company is headquartered in Charles Town, West Virginia.
