| | CNX Gas Corporation engages in the exploration, development, and production of natural gas primarily in the Appalachian and Illinois Basins, the United States. It produces coalbed methane (CBM), a gas that resides in coal seams. The company holds rights associated with CBM for 4.5 billion tons of proved coal reserves in northern Appalachia, central Appalachia, the Illinois Basin, and other western basins. CNX also holds the right to extract CBM from approximately 368,000 net CBM acres in central Appalachia; and from approximately 684,000 net CBM acres in northern Appalachia. As of December 31, 2007, the company had 1.343 trillion cubic feet equivalent of net proved reserves. In addition, it controlled approximately 300,000 net acres of rights to gas in the New Albany shale in Kentucky, Illinois, and Indiana; and approximately 573,000 net CBM acres in Illinois Basin, as of the above date. Further, CNX has the right to extract CBM on 139000 net acres in the San Juan Basin, 38000 net acres in the Powder River Basin, 41000 net acres in eastern Ohio, and 51000 net acres in central West Virginia; and oil and gas on 43000 net acres in the San Juan Basin, 9000 net acres in the Powder River Basin, and 53000 net acres in various other areas.
