| Smith International, Inc. provides products and services to the oil and gas exploration and production industry in the United States and internationally. The company operates through three segments: M-I SWACO, Smith Oilfield, and Distribution. The M-I SWACO segment supplies drilling fluid systems; offers a range of waste management equipment and services; provides completion fluids and related tools; and supplies oilfield production chemicals. The Smith Oilfield segment provides a suite of products and services used in oil and natural gas development activities, including drill bits and borehole enlargement systems, drilling tools and services, tubulars, completion services, and other related downhole solutions. The Distribution segment markets pipe, valves, and fittings, as well as mill, safety, and other maintenance products to the energy, refining, petrochemical, power generation, and mining industries through a network of supply branches, service centers, and sales offices. This segment also provides warehouse management, vendor integration, and various surplus and inventory management services, as well as distributes maintenance, repair, and operating supplies and equipment; and line pipe and automated valve products, including valve, actuator, and control packages. The company serves independent oil companies, national oil companies, and independent drilling contractors primarily through its direct sales force, as well as through independent sales agents, distributors, or joint ventures.
