Humana Names Houston Food Bank as $100,000 Winner of 2008 Houston Benefits HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM - News):
The Houston Food Bank, the fifth largest food bank in the U.S. that acts as a primary food resource for member agencies in the greater Houston area, has received a $100,000 grant as the winner of the 2008 Houston Benefits award, funded by health benefits company Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM - News). Announcement of the grant was made by Pattie Dale Tye, president of Humana of Houston, during the Houston Benefits Award Celebration Thursday, May 8 at Hotel ZaZa. Two other finalists for the award – Children’s Assessment Center and Open Door Mission – each received a $10,000 donation from Humana. The Houston Food Bank will use the $100,000 grant to support its Mobile Pantry Program, including the purchase of new refrigerated trucks. The new mobile units will allow the Houston Food Bank to have a greater capacity to move, store and unload fresh and frozen foods, giving it the opportunity to bring an increased variety of balanced, nutritious food items to low-income Houstonians. “Fresh food is key to better nutrition and health,” said Brian Greene, president and chief executive officer of the Houston Food Bank. “With the funding from the Houston Benefits grant, we’ll be able to expand the Mobile Pantry Program, bringing more nutritious food to those who need it the most.” Founded in 1982, the Houston Food Bank is a not-for-profit organization that fulfills its mission of leading the fight against hunger by acting as a primary food resource for member agencies and as a critical safety net for all in the greater Houston community. Every dollar donated to the Houston Food Bank results in $6.00 worth of distributed food, or enough to feed a family of four. “The transformational effect of the Houston Benefits grant is just amazing,” said Tye of Humana. “Like previous winners, the Houston Food Bank is doing significant, important work that truly benefits our community. With the $100,000 grant, Houston Food Bank will expand and improve the reach of the Mobile Pantry Program, bringing nutritious food to Houston's hungry. Without proper nutrition, our children and our citizens simply will not reach their full potential, and that hurts our community." The 11 judges choosing the recipient of the $100,000 grant included Susan Bischoff, president of Houston Public Library Foundation; Irene Helsinger, senior vice president of St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital; Argentina James, director of public affairs of Port of Houston Authority; William Livesay, Jr., partner of Andrews Kurth; David Lopez, president and chief executive officer of Harris County Hospital District; Gasper Mir, founding principal of Mir, Fox and Rodriguez; Carrin Patman, partner of Bracewell & Guilliani, L.L.P.; Jay Rogers, president and chief executive officer of IBC; and Steven Schnee, Ph.D., executive director of the Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County. Humana representatives on the panel of judges included Tye, president of Humana of Houston and Katrina Drake Hudson, regional marketing leader of Humana Inc. Since 2005, Humana’s Houston Benefits program has awarded a one-time, $100,000 grant to a different Houston-based 501(c)(3) organization to benefit the Houston metropolitan area. Houston Benefits supports non-profits working to improve the mind, body and spirit of Houston-area residents. Past recipients of the Houston Benefits grant include:
