Boston Globe, Worcester Telegram & Gazette to Cut Jobs

BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Globe says it plans to cut 60 jobs by offering voluntary employee buyouts.

Publisher P. Steven Ainsley is telling staff that the buyout packages are a difficult but necessary step to lower costs and keep the business healthy. The plan is part of a broader cost-cutting effort.

The company Web site, Boston.com, will be excluded from the buyout.

Employees will be offered two weeks pay for every year of service, with a cap of one year's pay. Employees with lifetime job guarantees will be offered three weeks pay for every year of service, with a cap of two years' pay.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette will cut 20 positions.

Both newspapers are owned by The New York Times Co.
